Moving Forward: It’s About Learning, Not Just Doing

Moving forward in life doesn’t always look the same. Sometimes it’s exciting, like aiming for a promotion, starting a business, or moving to a new city. At other times, it’s harder, such as when we face an unexpected change at work, a health challenge, or the end of a relationship.

When life shifts, our first instinct is often: “What should I do?” Action feels like the answer. And yes, action matters A LOT, but many of us notice that the momentum doesn’t last. Why? Because doing things the way we have always done them doesn’t take us very far.

That’s where learning comes in!

A Different Kind of Learning

Real progress happens when we learn more deeply—not just by applying new tools & techniques, but by becoming more aware of how we show up. In Ontological coaching, we call this “learning to learn.” As Rafael Echeverria said, “The future will belong to those who continually know how to expand their learning.”

So what does that look like in everyday life? It means observing ourselves differently across three areas that shape how we show up:

  • Language: The stories we tell ourselves and others, the narratives we live in, whether we are aware of them or not.

  • Emotions: The moods we carry in the background, affecting how we experience life.

  • Body: The posture and presence that quietly communicate who we are.

When we start paying attention here, new ways of seeing and new possibilities naturally open up. This is what learning is about.

Here are some shifts to experiment with

  • In language
    Instead of thinking or saying:
    “I already know this.”
    “That’s just not for me.”
    Try:
“This is new—I’ll give it a go.”
“I’m still learning, and that’s okay.”

  • In emotions
Notice when you’re caught in a mood of resignation, worry, or frustration. Take a breath, pause, and ask: “What would curiosity look like here?” Even a small shift in our mood can open up learning and another way forward.

  • In the body
Subtle shifts to our posture make a huge difference. Stand taller. Breathe slower. Relax your shoulders. These simple adjustments help us to be more grounded and open to learning.

Always Able to Learn

I grew up hearing, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” I now realise that was nothing but a background mood of resignation speaking. Science shows the opposite: our brains stay open to learning throughout life. The only real obstacle is whether we choose to stay open or not.

Moving forward isn’t just about deciding and doing. It’s about learning to see ourselves, others, and the world with fresh eyes. And when we do, new doors and possibilities open up - sometimes in the most unexpected places.

Happy learning,
Carine

If you've noticed an area in your life where you're keen to grow as a learner, let's chat. Coaching is an ideal context for learning that continues long after the conversation ends.
